Epic Guide · Import Compliance
Right, let's talk about the numbers that most UK importers only discover after they've placed their first order. Import duties, VAT, customs clearance, freight costs — the gap between "product price from China" and "landed cost in the UK" routinely surprises new importers, and sometimes even experienced ones.
This guide gives you the complete picture of what it actually costs to import from China to the UK in 2026 — with real £ examples, the post-Brexit compliance changes you need to know about, and a clear explanation of the UK Trade Tariff system.
The "product price" you see quoted by a Chinese supplier is almost never your landed cost. Your actual cost of getting goods into the UK and to your warehouse includes all of the following:
| Cost element | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Product cost (FOB China) | Your negotiated price | FOB = Free On Board — supplier delivers to Chinese port |
| Sea freight | £1,200–£3,500 per 20ft container | China to Felixstowe/Southampton. Rates fluctuate significantly. |
| UK customs duty | 0–12% of customs value | Depends on HS commodity code. Applied to goods + freight. |
| Import VAT | 20% of (goods + freight + duty) | VAT-registered businesses reclaim on next VAT return. |
| Customs clearance agent | £150–£350 per shipment | Charged by your customs broker for CDS declaration filing. |
| Port handling / THC | £150–£400 | Terminal handling charge at UK port of entry. |
| UK delivery (drayage) | £150–£600 | Container delivery from port to your UK warehouse. |
| Marine insurance | 0.2–0.5% of cargo value | Strongly recommended. Not mandatory but sensible. |
As a rough rule of thumb, your landed cost to UK will typically be 30–50% higher than the FOB China price for a standard container shipment, before accounting for import duty. Always work backwards from your target retail price before committing to sourcing.
UK customs duty is applied to most goods imported from China. The rate depends on the product's commodity code — its HS (Harmonised System) code, also called the UK Trade Tariff code. China does not have a UK FTA, so standard UK Global Tariff rates apply to all goods from China.
The UK Trade Tariff tool at gov.uk/trade-tariff is your authoritative source. Enter your product's commodity code to find the applicable duty rate.
| Product category | Typical UK duty rate |
|---|---|
| Clothing and textiles | 10–12% |
| Footwear | 8–17% |
| Electronics (consumer) | 0–3.7% |
| Furniture | 0–5.6% |
| Toys and games | 0–4.7% |
| Sports equipment | 0–4.7% |
| Kitchenware / homeware | 0–6% |
| Pet products | 0–5.8% |
Import VAT is charged at 20% on the customs value of the goods, which includes the product value, freight, and customs duty. If your business is VAT-registered (required if UK turnover exceeds £90,000), you can reclaim import VAT on your next VAT return. Import VAT is not a permanent cost — it's a cash flow timing issue.
Under PVA, you don't pay import VAT at the border — you account for it on your VAT return in the same period. This eliminates the cash flow gap entirely. Available to all VAT-registered UK importers. Make sure your customs agent knows you want to use PVA.
An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is mandatory for any UK business importing commercial goods. Without one, your shipment cannot be cleared through UK customs. Apply free at gov.uk/eori — typically received within 3–5 working days. Format: GB followed by your UTR or VAT number plus additional digits.
Importing 1,000 units of branded gym bags from China:
| Cost element | Amount (£) | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Product cost (FOB Shenzhen) | £4,500 | £4.50 per unit × 1,000 |
| Sea freight to Felixstowe | £900 | LCL shipment |
| Customs value | £5,400 | Product + freight |
| UK customs duty (4.7%) | £254 | 4.7% × £5,400 |
| Import VAT (20%) — reclaimed | £1,131* | Reclaimed if VAT-registered |
| Customs clearance + port + delivery | £620 | All handling charges |
| Total landed cost (excl. VAT) | £6,274 | £6.27/unit vs £4.50 FOB (+39%) |
One of the most significant opportunities for UK importers is the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), in force since January 2021. Under UKVFTA, many product categories — furniture, footwear, sports goods, luggage — qualify for 0% duty from Vietnam, vs standard UK Global Tariff rates from China.
| Product | Duty from China | Duty from Vietnam | Saving on £10,000 order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden furniture | 5.6% | 0% | £560 |
| Footwear | 8% | 0% | £800 |
| Sports goods | 4.7% | 0% | £470 |
| Clothing | 12% | Staged reduction | Up to £1,200 |
You're not legally required to use a customs broker, but filing CDS declarations yourself requires specialist software and tariff classification knowledge. Most UK importers use a customs broker — typical cost £150–£350 per shipment. Epic Sourcing can manage the full customs process as part of our freight forwarding service.
The UK customs duty de minimis threshold is £135. Goods valued under £135 are not subject to customs duty, but import VAT still applies. Splitting large orders into multiple small parcels to stay under £135 is considered duty evasion by HMRC.
Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) allows VAT-registered importers to account for import VAT on their VAT return rather than paying it at the border. It eliminates the cash flow gap between paying and reclaiming. Virtually all VAT-registered UK importers should use PVA.
US tariffs on Chinese goods don't directly affect UK importers. However, when US buyers reduce China sourcing, Chinese manufacturers become more willing to negotiate on price and MOQ for UK buyers. The 2025 tariff increases also accelerated supply chain diversification towards Vietnam, which benefits UK businesses with the UKVFTA advantage.
