Epic Guide · Electronics & Technology
Consumer electronics is one of the most lucrative — and most compliance-intensive — categories for UK importers from China. Get the product and compliance right, and you have a scalable, high-margin business. Get the compliance wrong, and you're facing product seizures, Trading Standards investigations, and potential personal liability.
This guide covers everything UK businesses need to know about sourcing electronics from China — from finding genuine manufacturers to navigating the UKCA marking requirements that have replaced CE marking in Great Britain.
China manufactures the overwhelming majority of the world's consumer electronics. The Shenzhen-Dongguan-Guangzhou technology corridor in Guangdong Province is the centre of the electronics world. Within a few hours' drive, you have access to every component manufacturer, PCB house, plastic injection moulder, and assembly facility needed to produce virtually any consumer electronic product.
Most consumer electronics attract 0–3.7% UK import duty. Many categories — computers, monitors, mobile phones, printers — are 0% under UK ITA commitments. The compliance cost is in testing and certification, not customs duty.
UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is the post-Brexit equivalent of CE marking for Great Britain. For most regulated electrical and electronic products, UKCA marking became mandatory for the GB market as of 1 January 2024. CE marking is no longer accepted for most categories in Great Britain.
Chinese manufacturers typically hold CE certification for EU export. For the UK market, you need UKCA. In many cases CE test reports can be used as the basis for UKCA self-declaration — but this requires specific assessment. Don't simply apply a UKCA mark over a CE-certified product without confirming the process.
| Regulation | Applies to | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regs 2016 | Mains-powered electrical equipment | Safety testing to BS EN standards; UKCA mark; technical file |
| Electromagnetic Compatibility Regs 2016 | All electrical/electronic equipment | EMC testing; doesn't interfere with other equipment |
| Radio Equipment Regulations 2017 | Wireless devices (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RF) | Radio spectrum efficiency; safety; spectrum access |
| UK RoHS Regulations | Electrical and Electronic Equipment | Restrictions on lead, mercury, cadmium, and other hazardous substances |
| UK WEEE Regulations | Electrical and Electronic Equipment | Producer registration; recycling obligations; WEEE marking |
As the UK importer and brand owner (the UK Responsible Person), you must hold a Technical File for each regulated product and issue a UK Declaration of Conformity (DoC). The DoC must be retained for at least 10 years after the last product is placed on market and includes: product description and technical drawings, list of applicable UK standards, third-party test reports, UK DoC signed by the UK Responsible Person, risk assessment, and user instructions in English.
In many cases, existing CE test reports (tested to harmonised European standards) can be used as the basis for UK self-declaration. The UK government allows this for many product categories. Where EU Notified Body involvement was required for CE marking, a UK Approved Body must be used for UKCA.
Battery and charging products are among the highest-risk electronics categories. Substandard lithium batteries are a fire risk, and HMRC and Trading Standards actively test power banks and chargers at UK borders.
Lithium battery safety (IEC 62133)
All lithium battery products must be tested to IEC 62133. Covers cell-level safety, overcharge protection, short circuit protection, and thermal management. Third-party testing mandatory.
UK plug requirements
UK market products must be supplied with UK-type G plugs (3-pin). Chinese exports often come with EU plugs — confirm UK plug versions are available and meet UK electrical safety standards.
Electronics compliance is one of the most technical areas of UK importing. Epic Sourcing UK manages the compliance process for electronics clients — from verifying existing test reports through to briefing compliance consultants for new product categories.
We review all CE/UKCA documentation before ordering — checking the test scope matches your exact product model and specification.
We manage UK plug conversion, English instruction development, UKCA marking, and WEEE symbol requirements for the GB market.
Where new UKCA testing is required, we coordinate with accredited UK testing houses (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas) directly with the factory.
We verify that electronics suppliers are genuine manufacturers — not trading companies without the infrastructure to support compliance claims.
For most regulated electrical and electronic products, no. UKCA marking replaced CE marking for Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) as of 1 January 2024. CE marking is still accepted in Northern Ireland. Check the specific product regulations for your category.
For most consumer electronics, UKCA self-declaration (using existing CE test reports as basis) is permitted. You don't need to involve a UK Approved Body unless the product falls into categories that required third-party conformity assessment for CE marking. Check the specific UK regulation for your product.
As the UK importer of regulated electronics, you are automatically the UK Responsible Person. You are legally accountable for product safety, holding the technical file, issuing the Declaration of Conformity, and cooperating with Trading Standards. Your details must appear on the product or packaging.
If you place electrical or electronic equipment on the UK market, you must register with an approved WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme. Registration is compulsory for producers placing more than 5 tonnes of EEE on the market annually, with lighter-touch requirements below that threshold.
Lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods (Class 9) for air freight. Sea freight has specific packing and documentation requirements under IMDG regulations. Your freight forwarder must be notified if products contain lithium batteries. Epic Sourcing ensures all battery-product shipments are correctly documented.
Electronics compliance is complex — but manageable with the right support. Epic Sourcing UK manages factory verification, certification review, UK plug conversion, and pre-shipment inspection. Book a free consultation.
